About Jim
James B. “Jim” Mowery was born in Kansas to James D. and Edna Mowery. Jim’s parents were from Oklahoma originally, but his dad followed better jobs with the railroad eventually settling down near Valparaiso Indiana when Jim was in elementary school. After graduating from Boone Grove High School in Porter County, Indiana, Jim attended Purdue University, where he earned a Bachelor’s degree in Law and Society, with minors in Philosophy and Political Science. While at Purdue, he met Cathy and they were married upon his graduation.
Based upon his academic record at Purdue and his Law School Admissions Test (LSAT) score which fell within the 98th percentile, Jim was offered the Herbert F. Stride full-tuition scholarship by Valparaiso University School of Law (VUSL). Though he commuted to VUSL for all three years of law school, Jim worked at the LaPorte County Prosecutor’s office for two years and interned with the Porter County Prosecutor’s office for a semester. Jim graduated VUSL with Senior Honors in 1997 and passed the Indiana Bar Examination upon his first attempt later that same year.
In June of 1997, Jim began he legal career with the Noble County Law firm of Heckner & Kirsch. During the nearly twenty years of legal practice, Jim has represented hundreds of private clients in a wide range of legal issues. Jim has also served as a Deputy Public Defender, County Plan Commission Attorney, County Attorney and his most recent public service was as Chief Deputy Prosecuting Attorney. Jim is currently in private practice from his office in Kendallville.
Jim has a long history of involvement with professional and philanthropic organizations, including the Indiana Bar Association, the National Association of Criminal Defense Attorneys, the Albion Rotary Club, the Apple Festival of Kendallville, LEAP of Noble County, Noble House ministries, United Way of Noble County, the Noble County Bar Association, the Noble County Republican Party Central Committee and the Noble County Sheriff’s Merit Board.
Jim and Cathy chose to make Noble County their home in 1998 and have lived there ever since. They have been blessed with two amazing sons. The Mowery family regularly attends Resurrection Lutheran Church. The Mowery boys are actively involved in Central Noble Schools both academically and in athletics. During soccer, cross-country, track or archery seasons – you will find Jim and Cathy at the boys’ meets and games cheering them on.
